Embracing dementia as an organic illness associated with ageing, this chapter examines how the concept of ageing in place, particularly at home, grapples with difficult issues of independence, care and living together with family members. We discuss two seemingly opposed but inherently related positions: ageing in place entangled with healthcare perspectives in the Singapore context from the 1990s to the present day, and architectural creative practice research interpretations of dementia. The former anticipates need and provides well-intentioned but often isolating solutions; the latter offers narratives and situations which can appear unattainable and risky. The ambition of this chapter is to shift the conception of spaces for living with dementia from that of caring in isolation, to an affective architecture of scenarios and situations, bound by relationality and social compact. The implication here is that architecture might recover its utopian purpose as a social condenser, serving a group where the question of what it means to be human is at stake. We conclude by advocating a need to complement an infrastructure of building-scaled projects with an infrastructure of domestic spaces which cultivate enduring relationships.
